Sky Venture Colorado -- Indoor Sky-Diving

We gather around the wind tunnel, a hexagon shaped room heavy glass enclosed “room”, and watch students and instructors practice their techniques.  Slight changes in body position changed the direction of the flyer and they went up and down and swooped up out of sight as if they were part of a Harry Potter movie.  We were fascinated by how the tunnel worked and how wind pressure affects the flyer.  Sky Venture Colorado is the only facility of its type in Colorado.  The tunnel was unique design was developed by a sky diver/airline pilot and there are only a dozen like it in the US.

The basic cost for a first time flyer is $52 for two minutes or $69 for three minutes.  The first time experience takes about an hour and a half – including check-in, signing of waivers, 15 minute safety briefing, suiting up and staging in groups of about 8-10 people.  Return flyers are charged only $17/minute.  Generally a three minute experience is plenty for one day, according to the instructors.  The air pressure is intense – wind speeds up to 170 mph.  The facility is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.  They have a very large parking lot – plenty of room for coaches.

The facility will accept flyers from age 3-103 and up to 250 pounds – the weight issue is due to safety issues.  The only other physical limitation to being a flyer might be shoulder, neck or back problems since the flyer is required to keep their arms at shoulder level during their flight and keep their chin up.  The General Manager and weighs 250 pounds, is very tall and has flown.  Sky Venture has group events such as birthday parties, sports team parties, bachelorette parties, corporate team building groups and military groups.  The facility also has leagues and competitions among the leagues that come to Sky Venture.  Sky Venture has guests from all over the world come to work with specific instructors and hone their skills.  The Air Force Academy cadets come to learn about sky diving and parachuting and practice before they are tested at AFA.  A sky diver can get an “A” license with 25 jumps and a “D” license with 500 sky dives.  The sport is well organized and regulated.

Sky Venture recently set the Colorado record for the most people in a head down formation -21- falling at 180 mph.  Their descent was judged on landing to determine that the requirements for a record had been met.
